E65 review

May 25th, 2008

Writing on Symbian World, Christian Titze has had his hands on an E65 and brings us his thoughts.

Comprehensive unboxing pics and comments act as a prelude to the main course, Christian’s extensive coverage of every aspect of the device. He loves the build quality, especially the slider mechanism, dubbing it ‘Nokia’s best built slider-device yet’. High praise indeed, and it continues for the semi-automatic opening and closing, and the satisfying ‘clack’ when reaching either extreme. The best battery cover he’s ‘ever seen’, perfect size and weight ‘for every suit’ and the ‘very sharp and readable display’ all add up to make, in Christian’s eyes at least, a ‘smart, handy and good-looking’ business device.

Have you got any questions about the device? Have you used one and have something you want to know? Head over and ask Christian, or leave a comment with your thoughts on the device.

Top 10 apps on an S60 – the next chapter

May 25th, 2008

Vaibhav Sharma from The Symbian Blog has jumped all over the recent invitations from fellow bloggers to post about which apps he installs first / couldn’t live without / would take with him to a desert island.

His top ten of apps he installs on any device he gets his hands on includes a couple that are consistent with other people that have posted on the subject (he share’s Mark Guim’s love for the dinky Calcium calculator app, for example), but the list has a couple of new items that are worth taking a look at. Gmail and Handy Taskman are givens, but how many out there would install Screenshot as one of the top ten? Clicker allows Vaibhav to control programs such as iTunes and Windows Media Player and Coreplayer lets him drop ‘almost anything’ into his device and have it play with ease.

Have you got any questions for Vaibhav about his choices? Would you change any of them for something from your own list? Jump over and let him know, ask a question or leave your list for others to comment on.

Getting ‘keyed in’ to the N82

May 24th, 2008

Mike at The N82 Blog has been musing on all things ‘N82 key related’. Not however the comfort or usability of the keypad, but what you can and can’t do with the keys on offer.

Picking up on a question from Devin of The Nokia Blog he muses first on where one would implement music keys on the N82 given the lack of them. Jump over for some interesting ideas for solutions and comments.

Mike also brings a tip for keen browsers who despair at the lack of a traditional enter key when completing form on certain sites that lack a submit button. Just as one can hit the ‘0′ key three times to create a new line in a note or message, this same technique lets you ‘hit enter’ just as you would on a QWERTY keyboard.

N81 8GB – the final post

May 23rd, 2008

Tam has finished playing with the N81 8GB he has had his hands on over the past few days, and has posted his final thoughts.

The final verdict – ‘some parts are great, some suck’. More details, you say? Well, incorporating so much memory into a device gets Nokia some kudos, along with a good camera, WiFi and GPS. But the N81 8GB isn’t the ‘perfect implementation’ according to Tam. The keypad could be ‘a lot better’, and the camera is worthy of more discussion (see Tam’s post for details). He hopes the successor to the N81 8GB has the same things but done better, as it is, Tam reckons it’s ‘a great idea with botched execution’.

Have you had a chance to look at the N81 8GB yet? Have you got any questions to ask Tam about his time with the device? Head over and leave a comment.

Nokia Maps – out of beta

May 23rd, 2008

There is comment aplenty about the news that Nokia Maps is out of beta, and the fact that to celebrate the fact, Nokia have launched a fun new site, The Mapsters.

Jack from Experience Mobility lists the improvements made to the service under the headings Drive, Walk and Discover (just like Nokia). The updated ‘easy-to-use’ interface has a new navigation carousel, whilst the pedestrian navigation ‘efficiently walks you from A to B’. Teo at Symbian Freak has similar information and makes note of the fact that the new version is available here.

Meanwhile Neil at iGadgetLife has posted about The Mapsters, the new site that allows you to control characters across a map of Tokyo, Paris or London. Mark Guim from The Nokia Blog also brings us a video of him taking control of one of these little fellas, which you can check out.

Has Nokia Maps made your life easier? Have you got any questions about the updated service? Jump through any of the links to ask the guys your questions or leave your comments.

N82 Black – reviewed in the Smartphones Show

May 23rd, 2008

In the latest edition of his Smartphones Show, Steve Litchfield brings us his thoughts on the N82 Black.

Steve doesn’t normally do device reviews when a handset comes out in a new colour, but he says this one is a ‘bit special’. One of the major beefs with the silver edition was that the keypad legends couldn’t be read in any sort of strong light, but this has been addressed by printing them white on black – as Steve says ‘problem solved’. He reckons that the D-Ring on the device has been subtly altered to give it more functionality by raising it slightly, though it is still fiddly until you get used to it.

The screen is still the same 2.4” size and dim, but Steve reckons this is a firmware issue and ‘strongly recommends’ that Nokia make a tweak in the next firmware update. For anyone looking for ‘robustness, navigation quality and low-light photography’, Steve says this is the handset of choice.

Do you have any questions to ask Steve about the N82 Black? Did he cover all the points you wanted to see covered? Head over and ask a question or leave a comment.

Sports Tracker update – video now supported

May 23rd, 2008

The space is awash today with news of the latest update to Sports Tracker, bringing it up to v1.76.

Vaibhav Sharma from The Symbian Blog comments that now as well as pictures, users can upload video clips from their work outs. In addition, the N78 and N96 handsets are now supported. Vaibhav uses the Royal We to claim that the blogosphere is in ‘unanimous’ concord that the name Sports Tracker is in need of an upgrade. Name suggestions range from Traveler, Voyager to Nokia Paths, and Vaibhav has thrown the debate open to further comments.

Meanwhile over at All About Symbian, Steve Litchfield also brings news of the upgrade and wonders whether the video upload will work with the widget. He is also in agreement that the current name is ‘restrictive’.

With support like this from around the blogosphere, how long do you think it will be before the name changes? Do you have any questions about the upgrade? Anything you’d like to see in the next upgrade? Jump through the links to have your say.

Nokia Internet Tablets – Happy Birthday

May 23rd, 2008

Amongst all thoughtfix’s NIT 3rd anniversary postings over on his TabletBlog is this article about the history of the tablet.

From the introduction of the 770 at LinuxWorld in 2005 to the next proposed edition, thoughtfix takes us through the progress of the NIT. From ‘slate-sized touchscreen device’ that wasn’t a phone or a PDA, to the svelte beauties we have come to know and love today, the reaction of the public towards Nokia’s tablets has always been – it’s nice, ‘but what is it and why?’ The 5 part tour of the tablet’s evolution includes interviews with luminaries such as Dr. Ari Jaaski (Director of Open Source Operations at Nokia) and Reggie from Internet Tablet Talk.

There are plenty of opportunities to pose thoughtfix questions, so get over there and ask away! Anything you’d like to see in the next NIT? What about issues you’re having with your current tablet?
